The Best of HBO Max This Weekend
House of the Dragon
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
Set two centuries before Game of Thrones, this charts House Targaryen tearing itself apart in a civil war. It’s back with “Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood,” and the pieces are already moving: Rhaenyra, leaning on her faith in Alicent, positions herself to take King’s Landing while the Triarchy sails out to face Corlys in the Gullet. The dragons, the scheming, and the body count are right where you left them. The third season is the reason a lot of people are opening the app this weekend.
Rick and Morty
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
A genius, drunk, deeply selfish scientist drags his nervous grandson across the multiverse, and the household never quite recovers. The ninth season rolls on with “Erickerhead,” airing late Sunday on Adult Swim before it lands on HBO Max. Nine seasons in, the show still alternates between throwaway sci-fi gags and the occasional gut-punch about this family, and the new batch keeps that rhythm going. A good late-night Sunday watch if you’re already along for the ride.
My Adventures with Superman
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
This animated take catches Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen as twenty-somethings figuring out who they are while working the Daily Planet beat together. “All’s Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S.” spreads the focus around: Jimmy comes out of a big date changed, Kara tries the dating apps, Lois is in a mood, and Superman wrecks Clark’s Saturday. It’s a warmer, funnier corner of the superhero shelf, and the third season is underway with new episodes airing overnight into Saturday.
Deadliest Catch
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
Crab fishing on the Bering Sea remains one of the most dangerous jobs going, and this long-runner just follows the boats through it. “Anything That Can Go Wrong” earns its title: Sig’s crane blows a hydraulic line and Clark climbs the rig in 20-foot seas to fix it, the Cornelia Marie crew fights a fire as the engine room fills with smoke, and another captain dumps pots to keep from capsizing. The 22nd season is deep into the run, and it’s about as reliable as comfort-watch danger gets.
Expedition Unknown
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
Josh Gates travels the world chasing the truth behind legends and unsolved stories, doing the actual digging and diving along the way. The new season opens with “Hunt for WWII Hellships,” a search for more than 1,000 POWs lost in the Pacific. Gates dives the wreck of the Hofuku Maru, a notorious Japanese transport ship, and gets rare access to join a U.S. Department of Defense recovery mission. A strong, substantive watch if you like your adventure shows with real history under them.
Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
A new Larry David project arrives with a premise that more or less explains itself: a sincere plan to mark America’s 250th anniversary gets hijacked the moment Larry gets involved. “Livingston” opens the series this weekend. The setup leaves plenty of room for the squirming, small-stakes social disasters David built a career on, now pointed at a national celebration. New, and on HBO Max from Friday.
Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch
IMDb
Watch on Prime Video
On a 160-acre ranch in eastern Utah, the Ollinger family keeps digging into a system of underground caves they’re convinced is hiding something, whether that’s Aztec treasure or a lost mine. In “The Giant’s Door,” James and Josh keep working clues from the Rhodes journal map toward a so-called Golden Staircase, and a massive stone door may be standing between them and it. Eric has a plan to get through. The sixth season is rolling, and it’s easy watching for the buried-treasure crowd.
